hello,
this is my first ever post so not sure if im doing it in the right place or if anyone can help but here goes....
I am a single mum to a 6 year old. ive been getting job seekers allowance since the 5th october 2012 and have been offerred my first nursing job.
does anyone know what i am entitled to inbetween leaving job seekers and actually getting paid at work? My new job is an hour away, each way and im worried about how i will be able to afford the diesel during this time of no monies.
i know there was job grants and in work benefits but they have either been stopped now or i dont qualify as havent been signing for 12 months!
there must be something out there for people otherwise no one would be able to afford to actually get a job. any help would be greatly appreciated

I think all the grants have stopped now so I have no idea how people are meant to get on, the JC advise asking your employer for a subWe’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Hi
When I recently had to sign on there was talk of being able to get a loan to cover you if your wages were going to be a long period from your last jsa payment. There is also a clothing grant that helps you to purchase clothing for the job and interviews.
The best thing is to ring and speak to your access to employment adviser explain you are worried and you want some help. Explain you have a child and that you are worried about mounting debt and not being able to cope in the period between coming off jsa and getting your first payment. - they should be able to help you.
Well done on getting the job and good luck in it. xx Let me know if you would like the leaflet I have from our local jcp about clothing grants. Becky0 -

Hi
First off congratulations on your new job
I do know as I have been told my my adviser that the £250 they gave to job starters along with the 4 weeks housing help run on is going to stop. I am not sure if it has yet you might be lucky and still be entitled to this. Tell the job center as soon as you can and ask about this.
I really don't know how myself and others are going to manage when we get a job as with most jobs you do not get paid until 4 weeks and the above was originally given to help with this gap. With no money for that 4 weeks whilst waiting for the first wage packet it is going to be extremely hard / impossible (especially as you rightly point out you have extra travel expensives and possibly child care costs to pay) When i explained this to the adviser I was told "its now a stick not a carrot!" well I am not asking for a carrot (incentive) to return to work (this has already been stopped and I agree with that decision) but I am asking for help to be able to survive whilst waiting for that first wage (even if it was a loan I had to pay off bit by bit from my future wages packets - I would be happy with that)
EDIT: Sorry I have just read the link given by AP007 thanks I will make a note of this and certainly be using it once I find work. I wonder why my adviser did not tell me about this. Thanks again0 -
yeah the job grant was £100 I think for childless people and something like £250 for those with kids as you just said.iammumtoone wrote: »Hi

It has recently stopped but I had to look up what if anything replaced it
The silly form asks nothing really about travel and they do not included the money you need to pay gas elec etc
Very odd form as it seems they decided what you will get but by that time you would have already started the job! We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
