credit checks for jobs

can somebody tell me what a credit search will show the job is for a bank i have 2 defaults on my credit file one for £89 one for £129 from good few years ago so think i prob have no chance anyways but every job seems to want to do a credit check these days (it did ask me on application if i had adverse credit history i said no but i wasn’t sure if this meant ccjs bankruptcy etc...)

any ideas exactly what this shows for the employer will they just go with credit score or do they get to see all individual accounts on your credit file and all details that are attached to them including name dob address etc (i also have one account on my file its a healthy account in the sense I’ve not missed payments etc on it but it has the wrong dob on it just by one day keep meaning to phone n get this corrected but will this show)

The truth is, its as they want it to be! Some are more laid back, some are very strict.

If I was you, I would explain the issues with your credit with them. If they think you'll fail anyway they'll call it a day as the credit searches cost them money. If you lie, you won't get the job anyway.

yeah i will for sure just be upfront with them and they can decide was just wondering though if its defaults they will frown upon or bankruptcy and ccjs
im guessing adverse credit history means any bad credit history at all?

Most jobs won't be concerned about a missed payment or two - it's generally CCJs/Bankruptcy they're looking for. I'd be honest with them anyway and say you have missed payments for x and y but are now up to date/working with them etc and you should be okay.

From the employer perspective surely it would be more suitable to give a positive reply eg "will be ok" or " it will be sorted ".

My definition of "ok" and an employers definition of "ok" might be different. I'd rather be upfront with them and tell them what they're going to find than them potentially think I'm lying.

Defaults fall into the grey area. A missed payment or two most wont mind about. CCJs, Bankrupt, IVA etc most will. Default sits squarely between the two.

As others have said, it will come down to how strict the companies themselves are. I personally would argue you havent helped yourself by saying you have a clean history when you havent, I know at least one company that allows minor issues as long as the candidate is up front but doesnt allow any black marks if the candidate has failed to admit to them.

totaly agree InsideInsurance, it asked do you have any adverse credit history and i wasnt sure if it meant bankruptcy ccjs etc.. so just clicked no but looking back on it as i said above that probaly includes defaults as well, i will just be upfront about it and see what happens, suppose the worst they can say is no
