Cheap way of making your own air freshened fragrance sticks?

I was shocked today at the cost of all the air freshener fragrance/ essential oil sticks I saw on sale in a garden centre (the sort of things you have in toilets and bathrooms) and wonder if anybody has an idea of how these could be made more cheaply at home? (And where you could source the ingredients?)

Piece of wood, take some wooden stirrers from costa or wherever, dip in essentail oil, stick in a jar.

I had to google what an essential oil stick was....how weird....

    like reed diffusers?

i have made some pot pourri refresher mist for my mother today
i used witch hazel and several essential oils, i used lemongrass, orange, and lime (not all together obv) she wanted citrus

i used witch hazel as its distilled
that would work for the liquid
and wood is porous so any would do
i have a bunch of starbucks coffee stirrers (my daughter procured them for plant markers:D)

i could try as an experiment if you like, but they wont look pretty:(
that would be cheap and easy though

well, if you carved the stirrers into more pointy shapes on one end, then put a ribbon round a jar, put some citrus peelings in the bottom of the jar, or some herbs, it would look fine.

Paint the jar with pva and food colouring and you'd get a coloured jar, or with homemade blackboard paint, or make a jar from a bottle by winding some wool around it, dip that in acetone, set fire to it and keep turing it, then plunge into cold water, you can make a jar out of any bottle.

Its all crafty stuff, check out pinterest for some ideas. Poeple with nothing to do all day spend hours pinning stuff like that.
