National express- will the driver ask for proof/ID for discount?

I am trying to book a coach to visit a friend going from Glasgow to Newbury.

The price without any discount applied is around £80 which is a bit steep for me at the moment.

After searching for discount codes I came across a site that said you get 60% off if you are armed forces or 20% for ex-armed forces, friends & family.

I clicked the link for the 60% off (although I'm not in the armed forces) and without reading the info properly I went ahead and booked myself coaches for £33. However, after reading the small print I realised that you have to show military ID to the driver. I managed to cancel the booking.

However, I called to query the 20% off as my aunt is ex-army and I wanted to make sure the code was genuine & if I would need any evidence if this etc. I was then told that as long as you have a ticket, the driver cannot refuse to let you on & the driver probably wouldn't even know/look at what price you paid for the ticket. Which has now made me think. Would the driver be likely to ask for any additional id? Or would he just check that I have the ticket & let me on?

I don't want to get caught out. The alternative is to go Glasgow to London Victoria and then London to Newbury. I can do this for £40 all in but it means a stop and extra time added on to my journey.

the driver cannot refuse to let you on

That may or may not be true but their conditions of carriage will allow them to check your ticket is valid and that you are entitled to the discount you have claimed and if not require you to buy a valid ticket. The driver may not know what you paid but if your ticket suggests a discount then they will know to check entitlement.

After looking at their website, I have found that if you are aged between 16-26 or in full-time education, you can pay a one-off fee of £10 for a coachcard that gives you 1/3 off for 12 months.

I am 26, and although I've been told I look young for my age, I do not have a passport and cannot find my driving licence.

Do you think they are likely to ask me for proof of age, as well as providing my coachcard & ticket?

They do tell you to carry proof of age so there is always that possibility
