Teaching assistant wages query please

Options
Hi folks

I have been successful in getting a job as a level 2 teaching assistant in a primary school. I know the hours I'm doing are 32.5 which is full time, term time only & the salary says it "equates to a salary of £11,955.

Ill be paid for 2 weeks worked & the 2 weeks in advance. Can anyone help me work out an approximate take home pay? I don't get any benefits (except child benefit) & will be paying £50. A month pension

Thanks very much

Assuming you are paid the same amount per month I'd take the annual salary and divide it by 52 to work out how much you'd get paid per week, multiply it by the number of weeks you actually work in a year (40?) and then divide by 12 to work out a monthly salary. (Assuming the salary they stated was for 32.5 hours a week).
I'd then put that number through a salary cruncher (Martin has 2 I think) that will work out tax and ni etc.
You can also try doing a quick benefits calculation as well on that.

The way I see it (hopefully) is that ill get £11955 as the pro rata amount so would I then just divide that by 12?

As I TA that's how I would see it too.

So If I do that i.e. £11955 divided by 12 =£996.25 then enter that into a calculator on here I should be able to get an approximate idea of take home pay?

Now I read 'equates to a salary of £11955' to mean that that is what you would get if you worked full time and for 52 weeks a year.

For instance our council the standard working hours are 37.5 so it would be 32/37.5 of £11955 which takes you down to £10201.60. The term time employees are paid for 42.67 weeks (39 + hols) so that would be 42.67/52 which would take it down to £8371.20.

They then pay you over 12 months so it would £697.60 a month.

However different councils calculate things differently so I would ask as 'equates to' is quite ambigous.

The letter I have says" grade d for 32.5 hours per week* term time only equating to a salary of £11,955 per annum.

    * they have already told me that full time is 32.5 hours per week

I know the pay generally isn't great for teaching assistant jobs, but others I've seen have been advertised at around £14,000-£15,000 pro rata so that's how I saw it as £11,955 once it has been pro rata'd if you see what I mean?! I've looked on the council website for grade d rates but can only find them for general admin roles & they come in within the same bracket £14-£15k.

At the bottom of Level 2, 32.5 hours per week, I would expect that amount, as you say, to have been pro rata-ed already, ie £11955 to be your salary.

Thanks everyone. It doesn't help either that the council pay you for 2 weeks worked & 2 in advance but I don't start until 29 April & had some money already!
