Capquest Question

Hi
I'm new to the forums but have been reading a while now.

I have had several phone messages from Capquest over the last couple of months, all recorded messages. They either say Capquest tried to call you & may try agian later, or Call Capquest Urgent on this premium rate number.
I have no intention of calling them, but I was just wondering how on earth do they get my number? I am not in any phone book & am registered with telephone preference services, & do not have any debt that I am aware of! How do I stop these annoying calls which can be from 8am to 8pm?
Thanks in advance for any advice

Well if Capquest are phoning you (and presumably their number is showing, so you could check it genuinely is Capquest), it is most likely that there is somewhere a debt of some sort that has been passed to them to try and collect. The original creditor will have given Capquest your phone number from their records.

Generally I find that after about a week of phone calls you will get a letter from them, so enabling you to identify the debt/original creditor.

Alternatively, of course, they could be trying to contact a previous occupant of your house/holder of that phone number.

Just noticed you say it has been going on for a couple of months, so it looks like you haven't had any correspondence from them? In that case it looks like any letters have gone to a different address. You don't say if Capquest's messages are mentioning your name, or whether they are generic, non-personalised messages. It may be worth you picking the phone up one time and seeing who it is they are trying to speak to. If it isn't you but some previous owner of the phone number then they can soon be got rid of by telling them that.

I'd write to them saying you keep getting incessant calls from them and you're not aware of any debt and can they write to you rather than call.

  • Thanks for your quick repsonse! I have lived here over 10 years & the phone number was a new one when I moved in. I am sure I don't have any debt outstanding & was wondering if its a wrong number as I just dont understand where they would get my number from!
I have no way of knowing its definitely them my phone doesnt display numbers, the message just says its them! they have been calling around 2 months now - very annoying!
    Thanks

I hope you manage to get it sorted. We've been getting calls for someone who doesn't live here for over ten years. The previous occupants were not the person who they're after either.

It's not the same company ringing each time, which makes it really annoying.

If you key 1471 after they have called you should be able to find out the number that called you, stick that into a search engine and see what comes up. I imagine that will confirm it is Capquest.

I realise the general advice is not to speak to DCAs, but since you say you don't believe you have any debt then a quick couple of minutes conversation the next time they phone should clear the matter up and get them out of your life. Alternatively if you really don't want to speak to them then take up matttye's suggestion and write to them.

Oh, and reading your post again, just because the number was new to you 10 years ago doesn't mean it wasn't someone else's before that. I am not sure what the guidelines or working practices are currently but a quick search suggests numbers can be reallocated in as little as 6 months.

Through a service similar to this? http://www.uk.experian.com/autotraceplus/

Or someone has just given a random number to collectors or when applying for credit.

  • Thanks again for all replys. I don't have the chance to answer their calls as I'm always out when they ring. It does seem to be a generic message, they mention no names of who they are or who they want to speak to.
I'll just presume its a wrong number! & hope they get bored!

Hi, Mackenzie Hall got our home number off Equifax, confirmed by them...we NEVER gave that particular number to anyone bar family, friends and the CRA.
