    With the LGPS, the death-in-service benefit means that she is employed in Local Government at the time of her death. It also means she would be paying pension contributions. It does not matter where she dies - it could be at work, at home or even on holiday. A lump sum of 3 times annual pay would be due. However the pension would only pay out if there is a spouse, civil partner or co-habiting partner. Children still in education would be entitled to a pension.

    Yes she has a spouse.

    Its her husband my father in law that's asked my to find out.

    The death in service benefit applies while working (i.e. employed) and on a reducing scale for 10 years after retirement. I'm not sure what happens if someone leaves Local Government employment before retirement though.

    Death while in the employment of LG whether in your own bed, at your desk, in a road accident etc - see link above - death in
    service


    Death after pension in payment - see link above under "receiving a pension" then "retired member" then "life cover family protection".
