New nail varnish chipped after a day

I bought some under and top coats (Boots brand) and varnish (Max Factor) and applied them properly but it chipped the next day.

Which do I have the right to return? Would it be the Boots stuff that isn't protecting the varnish properly or the MF stuff that isn't hard wearing enough?

I get my nails done in gel, but I use this for my toes.

There was a long nail polish post a while ago , dont know if you could access it . You could try returning the top coat and go for a more expensive one . I found the Sally Hansen ones ok . I've got a lot of polishes , sometimes they last a few days and sometimes just one day . I think it depends on what you're doing with your hands from day to day . I had gel polish for my weeks holiday and there was one little chip .They lasted a week but think they may last up to two weeks on some people. Maybe you were just unlucky . Did you give them about 15 mins to dry properly .

I find that (for me personally) using an expensive top coat solves all the problems. I can then chuck on any cheap varnish and it doesn't chip. However, the top coat I use is chanel and it is a ridiculous price. On the plus side, it lasts nearly 2 weeks without a chip and I work in a lab, so doing stuff with my hands all day.

I've found technique can matter alot. Always use remover on cotton wool over bare nails beforehand, this removes the oils and helps the polish stick. Allow to dry and then apply desired nail colour. Use several coats and allow plenty of drying time in between. Sometimes a quick soak of nails in cold water afterwards once dry helps harden the ploish.

Thanks. I'll try to find the other thread. I never thought of using remover first. I did undercoat, 3 coats of colour and one top coat, all with about 15 minutes in between.

There is something amazing afoot :j

In the meantime, polish adheres to clean, dry nails. It doesn't adhere to cuticle, so this must be removed from the nail. You can do this by using a cuticle exfoliator. Please never, ever cut the eponychium (the bit that everyone calls the cuticle) and never let anyone do it during a manicure

'Squeak' your nails for at least five seconds per nail with either nail polish remover or a bottle of scrubfresh (it's expensive, but amazing. Please keep it covered when not in use though or it will evaporate), apply a good quality base coat - CND stickey or Lumos. Then two colour coats followed by a good top coat - CND super shiney, or Lumos again.

Be sure to wrap the polish right around the ends of the nails - it makes them look 'finished' and will help protect the longevity of your manicure.

Cuticle oil will also help lengthen any service - polish, shellac or enhancements - and also reduces removal time.

Seche Vite is the only topcoat that stops my polish chipping & peeling within hours. Bit pricey, but in terms of time saved and nail polishes lasting longer as I don't need to repaint every day, it probably pays for itself.
Public appearances now involve clothing. Sorry, it's part of my bail conditions.

Clean dry nails and thin even coats, the only times I have done multiple coats the product refused to dry properly and peeled easily. I tend to apply sitting in bed, then lay down with my hands on the duvet - by the morning it's rock solid and won't chip for days.
