Does “do you need help?” in shops put you off?

I'm not sure it's a Brit thing not to like being bothered in shops. Maybe it is British to equate being asked "may I help you?" with being bothered.
Perhaps I shop in the right places, but I can't think of many times I have been pestered or bothered by staff while I am shopping. I'll usually be asked "May I help?" or "Are you finding what you are looking for?", but nothing particularly aggressive in sales terms.0 -
I sell bathrooms for a living, and we're expected to acknowledge customers when they walk in, and to approach them after a couple of minutes.
I find (and anyone working in retail will tell you the same) that for every customer who complains about being 'pounced on' there will be another customer who complains about being ignored.
The truth is, that no matter what you do you'll upset someone.
