signing on at the jobcentre

When you sign on do you get a face to face appiontment were you sit down with the advisor at the jobcentre and they help you find a job?

at mine all you do is put a tick in 4 or 5 boxes there is no sit down appointment with the jobcentre advisors

On a fortnightly basis, you just go in, look at the job points until they call your name, you go to the person, they look at your job log, may be ask you a few questions, how is't going etc. you sign the paper and thats it. You are invited to attend an "interview" with an adviser where they will sit and review your JSagreement, and see if you need any further support. This is done on a basis of how many weeks you have been signing on, taking into account your age and other things.
    Hope that helps.

I am going to interested in people responses to this thread. I think it depends on where you live and your circumstances.

I am alone parent with a child under 7 claiming JSA. Up to a few months ago I signed on with the same advisers as everyone else. I was there a maximum of 5 minutes they just flicked through my job search record and I signed sometimes they were that busy they never even looked at my record! I never saw the same person twice i a row.

Now they have changed the advisers for lone parents (every one else sees the same ones). A signing now takes around 30 mins they ask me questions on everything, I see the same person each time and they check that I have done what I said I would do last time. I don't think this is wrong it is the way everyone's signings should be (we all have to look for work) but I would question why just us lone parents have these extended signing on sessions. It does have its advantages as I am able to ask questions as previously if I asked anything at a signing I was told to wait until other appointments.

My record from walking in to walking out is three and half minutes.

IMO the JC isn't there to help you find work, they are there to help you help yourself. The people I see on a fortnightly basis dont seem to give a dam, it's like so long as you dont give them hassle then they don't hassle back.

I do have an actual advisor but don't see her often. She is more helpful and seems genuinly interested in getting me back in to work. She does tell the truth though in that if you are aged 24-55 there is !!!!!! all help for you until the WP kicks in, no training courses, limited help with CV's and Applications and no help once you find work.
Bedroom Tax / Spare room subsidy / Housing Benefit Reduction - It's the same thing, get over it.

People have to attend every two weeks to prove availability and actively seeking this should take around 5 minutes as that is all the government allow. On top of this you will have appointment s with an adviser as often or an infrequent as necessary.
It is not an advisers job to find you a job. they are there to help you to help yourself find a job. If you are struggling they can refer to help and support who will show you sites, look at your C.V. discuss interview techniques etc. Your adviser discusses what skills you have and if they can offer any courses or careers advice.
If an adviser is finding an abundance of jobs that you haven't found or applied for it has to be asked why not. You need to be honest and say what help you need rather than rely on your adviser to find a job for you. They are there to help, but not necessarily the way you want.

I use universal job match write everything on there never been asked anything since reclaiming, only sign on for NI credits, can't really see the point in signing. I see the same dis interested bloke every fortnight think he's there until he can retire.

Was actually thinking of signing off as I get no benefit, if I get sanctioned what are they going to sanction.

Last time I signed on my first jsa appointment was 5 minutes she then said the next one would be an in depth 30 minute one. I guess they refer new claims or people they think need more help. Luckily I didn't have to go to the 30 minute one as I got a job!

I think all that JCP staff advise is how to ensure someone gets their next dole payment (or not). Don't rely on them to help you find a job.
Opinion, advice and information are different things. Don't be surprised if you receive all 3 in response. :D

I lost my job 3 months ago. I have to sign on every week (I am 48) and my advisor goes through all the jobs I have applied for. She is very helpful and asked me to attend 2 seminars which were of great interest. I asked my advisor last week if I could get funding for a short college course ( 6 weeks) and she said yes she would allow me to do it....I think most advisors are helpful if they know you really want to work and not just signing on for the sake of it. I have had 3 interviews this week and another booked for next week so am hoping I won't be signing on for much longer. I have also lost a stone in weight and my advisor offered me the funding to buy new interview clothes which I declined as I have enough smart clothes to last me until retirement.

No they do not help you find a job.

They can show you ones on their site to apply for and after that you are on your own and not surety that you get an interview even if you meet the criteria
