How To Persuade Boss?

You have to think about what will win them over
if they have this blanket no time off in May mallarkey, for whatever reason, then they will not give you a day off just because you ask, as they will need to give it to anyone who asks who will all have their equally valid set of circumstances.
So yes, you do need to make your offer attractive. This is possible, done it several times this year myself, it has ended up me working the weekend to get the day off I need, but that is fine.
I indeed booked my own grad ceremony last year, thinking the date was a Saturday and it was a Friday, but got away with it by appealing to boss's better nature. This is what you need to do, but whether they had their day is not really that relevant to your proposal.
Or go sick, but you will regret it as you will just worry about being caught from now until then and especially on the day.0 -

Surely one day off, the place is not going to collapse! !
It is local so could ask for a late start or early finish, but in my eyes that's not worth the amount you'd pay for the ceremony (would want to enjoy it). And no body is going to miss me for 1 day (I mean I'm not part of management)
But both of my bosses (both married to each other) would have had their own graduation ceremony. So perhaps a bit of emotional persuading? ??
Are you absolutely sure that your graduation is in May next year? My daughter graduates this year but it is in June.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0 -

I really don't know what I could do. I can't work a weekend because business hours are only m-f and I can't swap a day.
Problem is, they give me a day off, everyone would want a day off, because they'd have special occasions too. As you've said.
Any suggestions that could get my head ticking in thought of an offer?Save in 2013: #166: 9,122.51/[STRIKE]5,000[/STRIKE] 10,000Interest earned in 2014: £257.61 20/04/140 -
If your qualification is related to your job then it could possibly be classed as a professional development day, as it would be natural and important to celebrate your success.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0

I do like the idea of that. But will management see it like that?
They're not strict, but when they've made a rule, that's it, they stick to it.
My other option is to be like I will have that day off no matter what. I am not coming into work. But don't want to lead myself into getting sacked.Save in 2013: #166: 9,122.51/[STRIKE]5,000[/STRIKE] 10,000Interest earned in 2014: £257.61 20/04/140 -
I mean. I don't get a say in when the graduation ceremony should be. Uni decide it.
Its not like it's my wedding and I'm deciding to get married in May.
Do you get what I mean.
Just need to get my boss reading that.Save in 2013: #166: 9,122.51/[STRIKE]5,000[/STRIKE] 10,000Interest earned in 2014: £257.61 20/04/140 -
Maybe you need to find out your graduation month first. On two occasions my graduation day was November, course finished in June.0

For one don't question me for when my graduation is. I am fully aware of the month my graduation ceremony is.
2. We are not on the same degree, same uni, or probably not even the same part of Uk.
3. I am not on this board to discuss when my graduation could be.
4. I am not your average full time fresh through school/college 16-18 cohort.
As clearly shown above one graduation is in June the other November. Different uni's different dates.Save in 2013: #166: 9,122.51/[STRIKE]5,000[/STRIKE] 10,000Interest earned in 2014: £257.61 20/04/140 -

I may just try the 'I've got to go to uni, and can't attend work' but then it becomes unpaid (work don't fund me for the degree). But I'm not sure if me saying that will be strong.
It could very well be a professional development day, but not sure the boss will see it like that???
I don't want to start the conversation with them until I can provide some good arguments/reasons for me not to be a work that day.Save in 2013: #166: 9,122.51/[STRIKE]5,000[/STRIKE] 10,000Interest earned in 2014: £257.61 20/04/140
