Negotiating

Options
I always enter comps for family holidays, but quite often the rules state that the prize is for 2 adults, 2 children under 12, so I'm never sure whether to enter or not, as my brother and I are definitely over 12, although obviously, we're a family.

Rules are rules, and I always make a point of never entering competitions which I feel is aimed at someone else - ie from wedding magazines, baby stuff, mum stuff - but I was just wondering if I were to win a holiday and the extra two tickets were for 'children under 12', how likely the promoter is to consider two technically-adults-but-actually-just-big-kids instead.

Has anyone ever negotiated or changed a prize in this way - not just holidays but on anything?
2013 goal: spa trip, holiday for my parents, ipad mini, clothes for my boyfriend and lots and lots of make-up for ME :happylove

I've won two major holidays via comping. One was to New York & one to Vancouver. Both were promoted as for two adults.
On both I negotiated with the promotor & added a child to the trip.On one I paid the cost of the airfare & on the other I just gave up the $1000 dollars SAKS spend.

That was the Sun newspaper. I'm not sure if they're always that strict but for that competition they were very particular in the terms and conditions that it was for a family only and the children had to be between 2 and 12. I remember not entering as my eldest is 4 but my youngest is still in my tummy!

I think in a lot of cases, with some negotiation and a willingness where necessary to pay any extra costs you would probably get away with it. I think the key would be to enter but not get excited if you win, until they have confirmed they are willing to be flexible.

I won a holiday to Hawaii for my daughter it was for a couple and 2 children but they had no children and there was no problem. They did not make up for the cost they did not have as only two people went but all was fine
  • I've always wondered, if it's a holiday prize for 4 and there are only 2 of you... are promoters ever willing to let you have an extra night or two rather than the two extra people? I always think this when I see holidays to e.g. Australia that are only for four nights or something!
