I found 1 police outfit at Tesco Shirley but the woman refused to sell it me when it went through at 4p :( I tried to persuade her to sell it me and even offered to pay the £4 it was marked up at but she still refused saying it had come up flagged as some emergency something or other. Cow! Lol

I am fuming. I had this as well.

We took 2 (different) outfits, and scanned them at the self checkout, one scanned at 4p and the other one at £8. So we asked the woman manning the self service to cancel the one that came up at £8. She saw the other one had only come up as 4p and took it off us and made some other people go check it. We were told it wasn't supposed to be marked down but we could have it for £8 if we wanted. We said no, we wanted it for the price it had scanned at, so we were then sent to customer services.

Customer services also said no, we couldn't have it for 4p, only for £8. We were then given a manager to talk to, who looked as though he was about 12. He told us it scanned at 4p to let them know that something was wrong with the item and should be recalled. He said for example, it could contain glass (?!), so for safety reasons, they'd be unable to sell it to us.

I brought up the fact that I knew other stores in the country were in fact letting people buy them for 4p. All he had to say to that was that he couldn't speak on other stores behalfs, only this one. Which I then queried if they're one company, that as far as I'm aware, isn't franchised, surely they should all have the same rules. All he kept saying was they wouldn't be able to sell it because of the safety risk.

Which really brings me to the question of a) if it's a safety risk as dangerous as he is suggesting, why have the staff not removed them all? And b) if it's a safety risk why, 10 minutes ago, did the women offer to sell it to us for £8?

Also, I really think if it was a safety risk, it should have been brought to the stores attention by someone other than a customer. And all stores in the country would then be forced to take them off the shelves and recall them. Plus, if we had not asked the woman to remove the £8 one from the machine, no one would have even been aware we'd purchased another one for 4p. So, basically, I'm very angry because I don't believe a word he said tbh.

I tried another Tesco, but they didn't even have any on the shelves.

Is it worth making a formal complaint?

They'll hopefully still be some in my store when I go later. Thanks OP, great spot.

I had this recently with a pair of 5 boys pants which scanned at 50p. They refused to sell them on teh grounds they were harmful. I asked in what way and they said they weren't prepared to comment in which way they were harmful but weren't allowed to sell them to me at this price!
    ridiculous!

You see I would kick up a big fuss about this excuse then. If I was told they couldn't sell me something, basically because of their price I would ask why are they still on the shelves??
Biggest load of rubbish if you ask me, or if it isn't Id be making a large complaint to the store asking why they are still selling items that are unsafe!!

As for your woman offering to let me buy it for £8 I'd ask why is it safe for a child to wear at £8 but not at 4p!
Saying that if the other scanned at £8 I would have paid it at the till then just went to CS for a refund and no-one would have known any different lol

Chances are it will be put back on the shelf once the next shift staff arrive, most items that have been taken off of me have reappeared back on the shelf the next day.

We kicked up as much as we could. I would've stayed there all afternoon arguing but I had to drop my OH off at work.

That's what got to me the most. Firstly being told I could still buy it for full price, then being told that I couldn't have it because it was unsafe. What difference does the price make?!

Chances are it will be put back on the shelf once the next shift staff arrive, most items that have been taken off of me have reappeared back on the shelf the next day.

I was hoping this might happen. I have to go out in about half an hour to collect my OH from work, so I think I'll pop into Tesco. It will have been about 6 hours since we last went, so I'll just hope there's new staff there.

i work for tesco clothing and the reason the items are 4p is so we know to take it off sale it makes room for new items
it depends on how quick or good the staff whether you find any 4p items
personally i would sell the item to a customer as why shoulnt they have a bargain.

I had exactly the same, after I questioned her why she then said if I put a quid in the charity pot I could have it, so I did this she then said she was off to clear the racks & put them away .... As she was searching shop floor for them I quickly popped the last 8 in my basket & whipped down to self service & paid no problem!! Lol sneaky sneaky.

Super pleased, I've put them away for the endless parties my daughter goes to!
