How can we find the best training course for 17+ ?

Hi DS1 wants to take a corse in Construction- Multi trade / Multi skilled and we have searched the internet and only come up with a few options.

I have no idea about funding - to be honest I know nothing!

Would some one be kind enough to point us in the right direction please?

Also is it possible for DS1 to take 2 part time courses?

Your son needs to see a career advisor, Connexions in England, Careers in Scotland. I don't know of English resources but in Scotland he can register for my world of work which has some great advice and resources.

  • Best to contact your local FE College or National Careers Service fro advice on what is available local to you. How old is he ( I know 17+)? Any previous quals/experience relevant?

You could also look into apprenticeships? And perhaps contact construction companies direct to see if they are offering any training/apprenticeships.

    Thanks for the reply.
He is just finishing 'A' Levels and has 11 A-C GCSE's
He really wanted to train as an architect but has had enough of 'education' atm and can't face the debt from university.

He thought that learning a trade may well be a way forward.

He is asking for my help and advice but I have no idea about apprenticeships or which course would be the best!

    Help!

Another vote for seeing a careers adviser; they'll have both the specialist knowledge and local information that he needs.

Meanwhile, he might be interested in looking at Foundation Degrees in Construction which are practical vocational qualifications with work experiemce involved.

    An example here -

OK, contact local FE College and ask about professional building courses. They will give advice on what is available and his options.
