what should I do

morning all ,

got a bit of a problem and i need loads of advice

here goes

got called into the big boss's office monday and was told there is a new position being created due the the re org that is taking place and the new position is a grade higher than mine

there are 3 of us who do the same job in a dept of 20 people some are a lower grade and some are a higher grade

one of the guys the the same grade as me is off on long term sick and maybe wont be coming back . the other fella is the big boss's son

how can i ensure this will be dealt with on a level playing field ? and what can i do if its not ( if its not i have to leave i dont really see me having a choice)

im not even sure if its going to be advertised internally , wewere told at the above meeting to put together a presentation to show our views and ideas on how we would perform in the role

i work for a very very large public organisation so imo it should be advertised

why is life so difficult ?

thanks for reading

  • You can't ensure anything. All you can do is to apply. And if he gives the job to his son, there is nothing you can do. That's life.

I think you have to take the positives here, you were called in to his office and he told you there was a new position. You have a chance to showcase why you feel you are the best candidate for the role.

If you feel that you are, then do everything you can to show him that. Unless you feel he ALWAYS looks after his son over who is best for his business, then what have you got to lose?

Shine like a star and dazzle him.

    thanks for the replies

i just felt he was asking us bth in the say " well you both had the same chancw"

i just feel it should be advertised properly you know

and i really want to say i dont think the boss should be involved at all he has other people in the dept who could run the whole process , but if i say that i might as well not bother applying

    such is life

If it is a large public organisation, I think the boss may be in a difficult position to be involved in the selection and give it to his son. So the advantage may be with you.
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'

^ Indeed, there will be recruitment policies which should ensure you are treated equitably.

key facts- public sector - re-organisation

No there is no requirement to advertise this post, it will be ring-fenced to the people at the same or lower grade.

Fairness - yes there will be a process, you will probably have to be interviewed.

If I was you, I would speak to HR and say you have concerns that there may be bias in the selection process (nepotism) and ask them to explain how the process is going to be equitable, in fact check your policy, in some Public Sector Orgs, you cannot interview close family and have to declare the relationship.

    You are unnessarily stressing.

If it was fixed, it has been fixed from the very start, no amount of advertising the position would ever change the result. Don't let it affect you, life can be crap.

It may very well be that they were busy on Friday and haven't viewed the presentation, or they are going to talk to you on Monday about it. Many people aren't transparent in what they are thinking, they don't think that they should explain 'We will follow this up next week' as they either take it for granted that you can mind read, or just don't care about your state of thinking.
