    Thanks, much appreciated
  • A shilling weighed 5.655 grams total...prior to 1920, 92.5% silver
    1920-1947, 50% silver.

Market Price is about 50p per gram so a pre 1920 contains about £2.50 of Silver...1920-1947 contains about £1.40 of Silver.

These are MARKET prices for the BULLION... the individual coins may be worth more for various reasons and obviously if you are selling them for their Silver, you can expect less than the market price.

A SIXPENCE is worth roughly Half, A SILVER THREEPENCE is worth a quarter, A FLORIN is worth double, A HALF CROWN is one and a half times..

You'll be suprised how little old coins will sell for to be perfectly honest. You'll find a 500 year old coin, think it'll make you hundreds and then discover you'll be lucky to get a tenner.

I collect ancient greek. My oldest coin is 2500 years old (in the first 100 years of coins being minted) and its still not as valuable as you'd probably expect! I just bough another 200 b.c. drachm for £30.

You'll really need to do some research on the year yours was minted and any cultural significance to see how much its worth. I have a George 3rd Spade Guinea from 1788 in mint condition and due to that being a significant year for Australians its worth a fair bit to them!

    Research is the key :)

  • I buy a couple of sovereign's every year as an alternative to cash.
Not as an investment as such but a long term alternative to putting one to many eggs in a basket.

I do also have a collection of silver shillings etc, much easier to give away in later years compared to bricks and mortar or money held in a bank. :D

Get your coins graded by a professional grading institute. Then research the price people pay for shillings in this condition and with the mint date like that of yours.

Bufger- it is lucky that the OP does not accept PMs as you wouldn't want to break the rules on MSE about 'no trading'.
