i would talk to her. she clearly know how to sort her money problems out. on a joint income of 50k your 17 thousand should be doable. make a list of all your debts with there intrest rates and try to pay off the most costly first. after that transfer the money to the next and so on. with a lot of scrimping you could have a lot of it cleared by the birth. you may be broke for a few months but its worth trying.0

First I have ever heard of it, might be different in NI though."All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered, the point is to discover them."

Certainly happens here in England - we've been renting privately for the past 8 years while the Husbeast's credit rating recovers to the point where we can rent from agencies.
Private renting would be one possibility that would take some of the pressure off for you but you do need to be absolutely fastidious about making sure your landlord puts your deposit into a proper protection scheme, your letting agreement stays up to date, you have an accurate starting inventory and agreement on evidence of any existing damage when you move in.If you lend someone £20 and never see them again, it was probably £20 well spent...0 -
Now that you are married and expecting a child (congratulations by the way!), I think you do need to sit down with your wife and properly plan as a partnership how to work through being able to afford both married life and having a kiddie - they ain't cheap so you do need to pool your resources and the piece around your wife sorting her finances is all very lovely for her, but not fair that you have to pick up the pieces, especially if a chunk of it was wedding expenses - now you're married there is no longer "my money and your money" - all your income is, IMHO, both of yours to manage to ensure you can deal with all that is to come - if your wife pushes back, would suggest asking what she plans on doing re her debts etc once her salary goes down to SMP!0

you have to sit down and talk...communication is important in any marriage but money communication is especially important!0

Hey,
You are both in this together, this is supposed be a partnership and you need to try and help her understand this.
On the renting/credit check thing, yes agencies do do credit checks but are limited as to what they can actually access (nowhere near as much as they might suggest in reality). This thread might be of interest:

Good luck Milgram, and congrats on the baby!
I'm sure with a bit of communication and budgeting you can get this sorted. Might be worth sorting out an SOA (sticky post at top of board) so we can see if there's anywhere you can cut back on
