Discharge of Loan fee (mortgage) - what is it?

Hi Please can anyone help us? We recently paid off our mortgage early and paid the MEAF fee etc. The deeds to the house were returned to us by the Prudential along with a letter saying that we had to contact a solicitor to act for us in the preparation of Discharge of the loan. The loan apparently will not be discharged unless we now cough up another £147.50. There was no mention of this having to be done in our original documents and we don't really have a clue as to what this is all about. Any advice would be very gratefully received.
Many thanks
Sally
