Basic Accounts and Debit Cards

I'm having problems opening a bank account, applied with Lloyds and they've said no I can't have a standard account but can have a 'cash account' which is completely no frills, no O/D, no credit interest etc etc. which is fine, I just want an account to pay my wages into and pay my d/d's. Problem is that with that account you can only withdraw money from a Lloyds cashpoint which could prove difficult for me as I don't have a branch that close.

So does anyone know of an account that is no frills but offers a debit card that I can use anywhere plus use when I pay for stuff in shops i.e. an electron or solo card?

Any advice appreciated.

Jo.

We were pretty bad history and managed to get a cahoot bank account it works for us as we have no local branches in the village so postal and accounts that use the post office are spot on for us.

I would search on this site I am sure I found some information on the main site when looking for our MIL

    Hi Jo1972

The Natwest basic account and the co-op basic account are supposed to be very easy to open and provide you with the basics you need ag cash card, direct debit facility.

    Hope this helps- Sweety

Can you not use the card in any cash machine with the link logo? My basic accounts have always had this facility. I too have heard good things about the Co-op account as you do get a electron card.

I have been using a basic account for nearly 8 months now and now deal in cash or bank transfers for everything via online banking. I honestly now dont miss my cards at all although I must say it took me a while to get used to having a empty wallet.

Lloyds sent me a 'cash account' booklet which states 'there are some products and services we do not offer. For example: using your Cashpoint card at cash machines that do not belong to Lloysd TSB'

    Thanks again!

natwest and co op cards can be used anywhere. I have both accounts and even use the cards abroad in cashpoints and outlets.

I'd recommend Nationwide, i've had a basic account with them for years now since leaving school and they're fab, never had any problems.

So glad that i didn't choose one which had an overdraft facility as this one works best for me,

Last year I managed to open a Co-op Cashminder Account after being turned down by Nationwide and Alliance & Leicester.

The account is good, pay goes in direct debits and standing orders go out and it can be accessed online.

For me the downside is the Visa Electron card it comes with. We have got into the habit of asking if (new to us) retailers take it before making purchases, embarrassing moments experienced at Dixons, Kwik-Fit, Odeon, Cineworld and PC World.
