Selling an App

I've been selling some apps that I've made for the last couple of months, which are making around £300 per month right now - I'm growing that steadily but I expect it'll max out soon and probably fluctuate from £1-500 in the long term.

What I'm wondering is what "businessy" stuff I need to do. Apple just pay the money into my account right now - is that it? Do I need to declare it for tax purposes? I'm thinking of registering a company simply for the sake of having a brand name on my apps, but I'm wondering if that's more trouble than it's worth for something that I only ever expect to be a side income? Would I be liable for more tax if I had apple pay my company and my company pay me?

You should have notified HMRC as soon as you started receiving an income from it http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/selfemployed/register-selfemp.htm

For £500 a month, it is probably not worth the hassle, you wouldn't pay more tax - but you are unlikely to save much either. Plus you would have the hassle of Company Returns each year, setting up PAYE to pay yourself etc.

Also, I think a "brand" name is treated different from a company name, so you could probably do that as a sole-trader - perhaps see if you can find a solicitor with expertise in that area who will give you a free half-hour session.
