Anyone had any luck doing this?

I just get confused as to what to promote. There are so many different areas to think about?

I have a lot of experience in this, what is true is that you need to promote something that you have an invested interest in. No real point promoting something that you don't understand or have no passion for.

I would recommend thinking about a niche christmas themed website for a particular product that sells well at christmas. For example a friend of mine a few years back set up a site all about Mario Chess, with reviews and where to buy it.

Take a look at what other people are doing surrounding your interests, then copy what works but with your own spin on it.

In my humble opinion advertising these days requires a high amount of very targeted traffic, affiliate marketing is age old but where new products and services come closely behind follows affiliate marketing.

I would say focus on one particular area you are good at, one where people are willing and proven to be spending money , there is no point wasting your time promoting something people don't want to buy.

Wordpress and other blogs like blogger, blog yahoo are good ways to get products noticed. The key is to feed a hungry market, always look for items which are relatively new to the marketplace and have very little competition and aim your keyword phrases to compete for the first 10 places in Google.

It's important to enjoy what you're writing about, as it will make the task of writing more enjoyable. If done correctly with the relevant pictures and links then, you can enjoy healthy monthly commissions from companies like Amazon, CJ, Affiliate Window.....

Once you have signed up to a few affiliate sites browse through the list of companies. It may give you an idea which market to target.

Remember to write some good content on your WordPress site before you apply though, or they may turn you down.
