The Co-op Bank Advisor Says No...

Your BR was probably noted on your account from when the OR wrote telling them that he had no interest in the account. Also a lot of banks keep an eye on the London Gazette, I know Halifax in particular do.

    Yes, that would explain it...

It just really annoys me that BR's (undischarged and discharged) get treated appallingly as though they have done something so criminally wrong yet for most of us, circumstances have put us in that position.

Those people who do undertake criminal activity get to wipe their slate clean quicker under the Rehabilitation Of Offenders Act.

Rant over and back on topic. :mad

You can have a couple of Cashminder accounts, that is not a problem. You can also get an ISA with them and a Savers account. With the Savers account tell the advisor there is BR on your credit file and if the computer says no that you will want them to appeal it. It then is usually accepted. I have 2CM, 1ISA and 1Savers acounts.

Yorkshire Building Society do a good online savings account that I know BR'sand discharged BR alike have got. You just apply for it online.

Also find out if you have a local Credit Union. They are superb and I recommend everyone has one, whether you are working or not, BR or not.

Oh Tiger thank you so much, I will look into the others you have mentioned as well now. I just thought a savings account with the same bank would be ideal. Goodness can I have another cash minder as well then that would be good as well, as I am thinking of going self employed, it is only a thought right now, but I doubt I would get a business account but maybe I could use another CM account instead.:j

Oh you and me both, I really get angry, most of us did not go out of our way to end up where we did. And this far down the line, having run an account with no problems you would think there would be some leeway.

If you do go SE then try Nat West, they have one called the Freedom Account, I think. Will need to go check on that. But I know lots have managed to get it.

  • Don't even bet on an upgrade once your 6 years discharged has come to pass...

I applied a couple of months ago - sat with an account manager for about 2 hours putting together application for upgrade and credit card with low limit... COMPUTER SAYS NO!

Just to rub salt into the wound every time I go into the branch to use the counter services the clerk takes one look at my account and points out that it is only a basic account and maybe I should look at upgrading!

As much as I appreciate the Coop having given me an account during my darkest financial times they can go whistle once I feel I can apply for an account elsewhere (gonna space out credit searches obviously!)

Could your computer say No be due to other reasons, length of time on ER, income, time at address etc. It is annoying I know, loyalty counts for nothing in this day and age. number of searches?

Best idea is as you said to apply for a new account when the searches allow.

Apart from a cheque book [soon to be outmoded] and the possibility of an overdraft facility, there are few if any advantages of having a full account over a basic account.

Am not sure I comprehend any longer as to why everyone is so keen for a 'proper' account?

Is it like, having a 'proper car'?
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

I'd rather go back to the days where a physical bank manager would be able to review your account and make a decision rather than such automated services that consider nothing.

Don't get me wrong, I am grateful to the Co-op who gave me a basic bank account long before it was needed (for bankruptcy) but would still prefer to have that personal approach from a bank.
I agree with the personal approach, that would be nice

I applied for an upgrade 6 years and 3 months after going BR-they gave me an upgrade (with an overdraft facility-I did not want this but it goes with the account) and a savings account too. I have also kept my basic account on.

So really it wasn't an Upgrade it was a new application? Since you say you have kept your basic account.

If it was an upgrade you would have kept the same sortcode and account number?
