How far in advance to make HM sweets?

Calling all sweetie makers!!!
The school fete is early next month and I was wondering how far in advance I can start making sweets for the event?
How long do things like fudge and peppermint creams keep? I've not had this problem before as we normally scoff the lot so it's never an issue!!
Also, how do you guys package yours? Is there an alternative to expensive cellophane bags that I haven't thought of? I suppose I could just put them in tesco value freezer bags but they don't look very nice.
Thanks peeps!

Fudge will last quite a while. We have it at Christmas and make them about a week or two before hand.
We also make rum truffles and shortbread with a layer of caramal and a layer of chocolate at the same time
Stuffed dates will keep a long time.
As far as keeping/presenting goes, old Forrero Roche (sorry spelling) boxes make them look pretty

I dont do it myself but my mother used to make her christmas sweets around the middle of November. She kept them in tupperware (she had everything in it) and about mid December my father would start cutting out cardboard circles and covering them with alluminium foil to use as bases for the sweets. We also kept and washed the poly-trays that came with various foods on them to re-use as sweet trays.
The sweets that mum made were varied to say the least, from mint creams to brandy soaked cherries covered in chocolate and marzipan bananas and oranges, she also had a selection of sweet moulds that she would use filled with choc and a variety of 'addatives' such as nuts and raisens etc.
Just writing this has brought back some wonderfull memories, good luck in your venture.0 -
Thanks for your advice. I didn't want to inadvertantly poison anyone!!
I'll probably make peppermint creams, chocolate truffles and fudge, although the cherries sound fab so I may have a go at those too.
I hadn't thought of ferrero rocher boxes, they'd look nice. I'll have to eat the contents before I put my sweets in!!!I like cooking with wine......sometimes I even put it in the food!0 -

You might be able to source cellophane bags quite cheaply - I tend to buy the ones on ebay that are sold for putting hand-made cards in and they work okay. cel x:staradmin:starmod: beware of geeks bearing .gifs...:starmod::staradmin:starmod: Whoever said "nothing is impossible" obviously never tried to nail jelly to a tree :starmod:0

You could always go down to a local fabric shop or charity shop and get some cheap voile - it would only be a quid or so a meter if brought new - and cut it into lots of little circles then just put the sweets/fudge/whatever in the centre - pull the edges in and tie with a little ribbon.
I imagine you could probably get a few out of few meters and they would look prettier than a cellophane bag. you could even bag a few up ready as a display or for sale - rahter than having to fiddle about with it on the dayTime to find me again0
