Washing oily clothes

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help

My DS has been working on greasy oily steam engines for the past week and has come home with a pile of oily overalls that need a wash. I know that putting them in the machine will cause residue on following washes so has anyone any ideas?

Will it work if I hand wash them and then put them through the machine (I am not sure that hand washing them will get them completely clean enough)?
I wanna be in the room where it happens

  • There`s some stuff called `Elbow Grease`that might do it. It`s only £1 for a spray bottle, and it might take a couple og goes, but it`s the best all-round de-greaser I`ve come across. DD told me about it, and I used it on the ground-in black bits of OH`s `dirty jobs` old cotton twill shirt, not expecting much but it came up like new!
Spray it on the greased-up areas and leave it a bit then wash as normal.
  • Do you have any Sugar Soap? I'd be having a think about soaking it in a bucket of that or a strong solution of soda crystals, then giving them a good scrub before going anywhere near a nice clean washing-machine.

My son is a mechanic so I have greasy boilersuits and jeans to wash every week.
They get thrown in the machine at the weekend on a hot wash with bio soap powder (smart price) and come out clean.

Never had any problem with `residue` on the next wash.

Shove them in the laundry and squirt in some Fairy!

Fairy cuts through grease and always has done remarkably well. Make sure to put on a warm wash.

...it's also cheaper than some of the methods above so might be worth a shot.

I used to get black grease all over my work trousers. I laid them on the draining board, sprinkled some white spirit over them and gave them a good going over with a scrubbing brush. Then washed them in the sink in biological washing powder and hot water.

Just make sure it's just enough fairy rubbed into the spots or just a tiny bit in the machine. The bubbles fairy makes can be quite - spectacular - if you overdo it.

Mostly, bio washing powder and superhot wash seemed to work for my diesel mechanic boyfriend's clothes. Just as well. You wouldn't have caught me scrubbing his trousers.

You will be fine just putting them in the washing machine with normal powder on a hot wash. No need what-so-ever to buy anything extra or do anything different.

I wash OH's clothes in the machine at the weekend. His had petrol on them. I wouldn't think twice about what I put in the machine next.
