Help me find a good men's bike - up to approx 250.00 please.

Hi,
Hoping someone can help with some advice. My husband has a big birthday coming up and I'm hoping to buy him a bike. It'll be used mainly on roads/cycle tracks - not for massive mileage - really just to keep fit. I've been advised that a hybrid would be a good choice (doesn't mean much to me!). Can anyone recommend a good one? Are there any bargains out there to be had?! Approx 250 budget.
