Volunteering for an Hospital

Hi all,
I am presently a jobseeker and at the same time I am looking for volunteering work (as advised by my adviser).
Also, I would like to know if it can be worth to apply to NHS Council of Governor elections (patient or public Governor), since at the same time I would like to give something back to my county.
Are there any differences in term of responsibilities as a patient Governor or public Governor?
How can this volunteering work help me in my job search or career?
Thanks in advance for your help,
