Any trumpet and flute players?

Options
Just seeking advice on instruments.

Ds is desperate for a trumpet and despite severe autism and learning disabilities he appears to have natural musical talent,so I'm betraying my ears and buying him one for his birthday.Ear plugs at the ready!

Looking for a decent secondhand student trumpet and found a John Packer for £6 that I've reserved.Any good or are there any recommendations?

Also, while looking,I spotted an Elkhart flute.Having always wanted to play the flute I accidentally reserved that for myself:o .Is the brand any good?

I play the trumpet (for my own amusement), and I teach the flute, professionally.

I don't know much about trumpets - mine's a Yamaha small bore - which is supposed to be easier to play - the small bore, that is. I don't know how Yamaha is placed in trumpets. I have perfect pitch and the trumpet is a transposing instrument so I tend to play by ear rather than confusing myself with the music. (Look up Transposing Instruments if this doesn't make sense). You might not need earplugs - trumpets do not need to be played loudly. For LOUD you need a clarinet.

But in the flute world the Yamaha 211 is the dollar. If you want to buy a flute and then sell it again - because you've given up, or because you got better, then let it be a Yamaha 211 as it will sell straight away on eBay. A 211 will get you to a good grade 6, though by then I've encouraged my pupils to upgrade or at least bought an insert block for the head joint.

    Thanks :)

Went with the John Packer as a decent price and apparently recommended by someone to do with the bbc Philharmonic orchestra? It's in lovely condition.Didn't want to spend a daft amount incase he just ends up being silly with it!As for loudness, with ds it will be lol at least while he experiments with it!It's hir birthday on wednesday so will give it to him with his other pressies, can't wait to see his face-he's always wanted one but thought he could only have a toy one :)

I had a quick go with it today but don't know how to get a sound out of it :o :rotfl:

Flute wise,I ended up with a boosey & hawkes. I've heard that it can be quite easy to learn if you can sing?

  • if a trumpet's anything like a horn or bugle, purse your lips as if blowing a raspberry and then blow into the mouthpiece.
