in Cutting tax
hi,.
I was in London briefly for 2 months from April to may 2007 for my summer internship. I filed the reuquired tax return and also got refund from the tax authorities for the overpaid amount. My visa was for 2 months only and i returned to India post that to continue studies and eventually join a job in India.
I have however been receiving letters asking me to file returns in the UK. I thought it must be a mistake and neglected it. Now there are significant penalties in my name. Iam not a UK resident, nor do i have any assets in UK mor do i earn any income in UK. Just a zero balance hsbc account. Why am i liable to file returms? How do i rememdy the situation and clarify it with the tax authorities. Please help if you have any idea about this! Thanks!

Maybe because you didn't tell them you had left the UK? Ring them up and explain your circumstances, perhaps they could cancel them0

Which years are the returns for?[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

Thanks for your replies Davide123 and dori2o . I was in UK in Apr-May 2007. I had .filed return for 2007-08. Now the pending returma are for 4 years 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. I remember filling the form P85 for exiting the Uk tax process, following the same process which all my co interns had followed. They havent received any such communication, so i am assuming some issie might have happened with my form. I was in another xitu and the communixatipm was sent to my parents address so i sort of missed the urgenxy of these. Do you think calling might m will someone be able to actually take note of my issue on call?
Btw, i also cannot get any copy of the p45 i sibmitted from the company i worked in as that company was shut shortly.
Please help!0 -

Yes call them, get them to cancel the TRs
Say you didn't need to complete them.
Otherwise you will have penalties to pay.0 -
Davide123 thanks. Will call them today and try to explain the situation.
Le loup, pun was not intended... :P just a scary coincidence. :P0 -
Just checked all my old documentation. I had submitted P85/86 along with P45 from employer and received an acknowledgement from HMRC asking to file return for 2008. I have the online filing receipt also. So I am wondering where the error might have occured. Today was evidence gathering day, tomorrow i will call and talk to them.0
