Why Has HMRC Given Me A New NI Number?

    I have never been made bankrupt, unless it can happen without anybody telling me they have done it to me.

    I think you would be best , as already suggested, to give them a call and check just what they have in your record. There have been a lot of changes at HMRC recently, notably the beginning of reporting in real time. It is possible that a payroll dept has dropped a clanger & typed in the wrong NI no. Or the letter could have been produced when part of their system was down. The best time to call is usually before 9am (the people at that time seem to have a good idea of what they are doing & don't appear to be the usual call centre computer says no types). Hope you get it sorted quickly.

    I phoned them this morning, apparently my records had not been linked to my NI number for some reason and it was a temporary number they gave me. I gave them all my details and she said that she would get the numbers linked up, but it would probably take a couple of weeks to do.
