Teacher pension question

My husband is being made redundant (after 30 years teaching in the same school) at the end of August. As he is 55, he would like to retire early so he wants to take his teacher's pension from the beginning of September. I'm guessing that this is ok, but wanted to check that he doesn't need to wait a period of time after his redundancy. Sorry if this sounds like a daft question but this is all new to me. Also, when does he need to apply for his teacher's pension? We have downloaded the form from the TP site but aren't sure as he only found out about the redundancy 4 weeks ago. Thanks
