I think I understand it now. The bottom line is that I should have been paying more into my pension over the years. But hopefully it's not too late. I will arrange to contact the insurance company.

Don't look to the original company. You may be better off paying into a new pension (with lower charges and higher choice).

An Ins Co will only tell you about their own products which will make them money. They won't tell you about others which just might be better for you.
