Incorrect "In Arrears" on credit report

Hi,
Sorry if this is in the wrong place.
I had a contract with Orange Mobile that was supposed to end in Sept 12 as I sent an email and a letter to stop the renewal. I didn't hear anything and didn't receive any bills like I normally did. I then received a letter in December from Orange saying that I owed £160 odd as I hadn't been paying my contract.
So I call Orange and speak to someone who can see that I haven't used my phone since the renewal date (as I had another with 3Mobile) so all I had to pay was £56.55 which was for the last month of the original contract. I paid that amount and he said that would be it.
I then receive a letter from a debt collection agency asking me for the remaining amount, so I call them and they tell me to speak to Orange. When I call Orange I get no help, I've had no help from them since December, I keep getting letter from the Debt Rec Agency.
I've sent a complaint email to Orange and their response was "Please pay as soon as possible", I then replied to which I heard nothing. I've called them (Indian call centre) numerous times and been promised a call back and heard nothing. On my credit report I have a big red mark next to it as it says I hadn't paid for 3 months.
I've now been rejected credit cards as was planning to go on holiday, I was looking at getting a Renault on finance for a while and was then rejected because of this.
So I was hoping someone could help me out on where to go from here. I have been promised a call back tomorrow from someone based in the UK, I'm looking to get compensation for all my time, all the grief and losing out of finance etc. What's the best course of action? And how much can I get out of these mindless idiots?
Thanks for your help.
Andy

You cant prove that this on your credit file meant you couldn't get the other finance (as you have no access to their lending criteria and your associated ranking with that particular application) so I wouldn't waste your time with trying to get "compo" for that.
Go through their complaints procedure then go to Ofcom if they don't resolve your issue.0 -
I would e-mail them back and remind them that as this is a consumer credit issue, they are required to respond in accordance wth the DISP rules of the Financial Conduct Authority, which means a final response must be issued within 8 weeks of your original complaint and if they fail or the response is unsatisfactory you can take them to the Financial Ombudsman Service.0
