3 P45's in the same tax year.

I worked as a Casual Postman during 2011/12 tax year. At the time you worked 12 weeks then had a 2 week break. During this time Royal Mail sent out a P45 for the period worked.
That year I accured 3 P45's.
However as I was still "on the books" my service, payrole AND TAX continued to carry over on each P45.
I have received a letter from HMRC to say I owe £3000+ in unpaid tax.
I would appear that HMRC have been counting each P45 as individual income and not the final income shown on the end of year P60.
Has anyone got a suggestion as to how I approach HMRC?

Did you get just Part 1A of the P45s or did you get Parts 2 and 3 as well?
If you had Parts 2 and 3 what did you do with them?
Can you give details of what appears on the P45s, all sections from tax code onwards?0
