Shortlisted then told not shortlisted

Recently applied for a job and was pleasantly surprised to hear been shortlisted for the job, I had 1 telephone call (which they'd tried to contact me at home before phoning me at work) then a letter asking me to complete some forms and information on job and interview date.

Due to the fact that it's around 5 hours drive for home and I needed to be there for 9am I booked a hotel down the road to them around 3 days after I'd received confirmation by letter about the interview.

Yesterday I had a call telling me that they'd been an error and I hadn't been shortlisted, they're even refusing to reimburse the hotel fees!

What would you do if this happend to you?

Is there no way you can cancel the hotel? Alot of hotels now let you cancel upto a certain time on the day of arrival?

It's one of the ones you book a few weeks ahead and can't cancel, so money's gone.

It was their error so they should reimburse you. They should take responsibility

Write and threaten them with the small claims court

i'd be writing a letter to their head of HR (or whoever deals with recruitment in that particular company). they f**ked up, you lost out on £££ so they should refund. simple as.

That is rotten....I would get a receipt from the hotel and write the company a really nice letter expressing your disappointment over their error and stating how you will appreciate their reimbursing you for their mistake. And then I would be grateful you didn't get the job - anyone that unorganised may be a nightmare to work for!

    Thanks all,

I did intend to contact the HR Mgr to state I wasn't happy - certainly won't be applying to there again, I think it's the same place who were intending to have a few jobs going a few months ago and then the jobs never materialised. Glad I didn't waste my time going there for an empty reason.

Although I know that I wouldn't get reimbursed if I had attended, the fact that I'm not even allowed to have an interview gets me and I should get the money reimbursed... glad to say I never did buy that suit on weekend, glad now :j
