25th wedding anniversary bbq

Hi there, new to this thread so sorry if i've done this wrong!

It's my Mam and Dads 25th wedding anniversary in June and i would love to do something nice for them (they are already booking a weekend away so can't do that) so i thought about gathering the family together and having a bbq. The family have had abit of bad news recently so thought it would also be a good idea for everyone to gather together and raise spirits high! However...no one else in the family did anything special for their 25th wedding anniversary, just went for a meal together so wondering if anyone thought this was a daft idea??
Also what good wedding anniversary presents/decorations are there without being tacky?
thanks so much :D

  • A lovely idea.
We had a family party for ours. people gave us champagne, hand made cushions, silver candlestick holders and picnic sets. I wasn't expecting presents. I think the champagne was probably the most useful because it could be used for various celebrations Christmas etc.
  • I think i'm going to go for it :D The worst that could happen is people not turning up... even then there would be the main members of the family there. Good excuse for a knees up :D

i actually think its a very good idea....but a lot really depends on whether your parents will also share that view...

When it was my parents 25th we had a bbq in my sisters garden, invited just a few friends and family and it was honestly a really lovely afternoon...chilled and catching up with some family we had not seen in ages.

even if it turns out to be just a few attending then it will still be lovely and special

In terms of how you decorate it all...you really dont need to go to heavy...I think if you were to get some nice serviettes and maybe a few balloons thats all you really need...if you have some photos of their wedding you could put them around and possibly if you really want to go back to the era...some 80s music on the ipod!

We also got a plain white cake from M&S and added a few fresh flowers around it in the colour of my mums original flowers and served it with a glass of champagne...which seemed to go down really well with everyone and was really easy to do

In terms of presents...my mum just loved having her nearest and dearest around her and she loved the cards!....you really dont have to go overboard on presents but a few ideas could be a plant for the garden or a rose bush,
we gave my mum a bunch of wedding flowers and a silver hair clip and my dad had a bottle of something to drink...i can remember what...but in honesty it wasnt about the presents...they both really appreciated the fact that my sister and I had created an afternoon with their favourite people and lovely memories.

BBQ sounds like a great Idea but be prepared for the weather aswell.

Decoration wise theres loads of paper balls around at the moment that you could hang from trees or maybe some lanterns, like someone else said dont go really over board but just enough so it looks special.

My experience of family gatherings is that family members have good intentions of helping but most fail to actually help so be prepared for this aswell.

Are your parents into their garden? David Austin is a speciallist rose company and they have all kinds of rose bushes and do anniversary ones and you can choose to have it delivered on a day that you would like and it comes in a lovely big box. Theres usually a discount code floating about if you google it.

    Good luck.

Great idea. It is a milestone that shouldn't go unrecognised!
Good ideas above for the decorations. Also try speaking to local community councils to see if they have large gazebos/small marquees that you could put up or have on standby incase of inclement weather. Add lots of fairy lights (you can get battery operated ones although not surely stockists) if you are going to party into the evening.
What about trying to recreate some things that they had on their wedding day, like the favours and flowers. If you can get your hands on their photos without them noticing you could scan them and make some collages on canvas with various pics of the day? Jut a few ideas that may or may not work.
I think it's a lovely idea and you should go for it.

How lovely. It's a good idea to get everyone together, and a very good excuse to all meet and have a catch up. As a family, we find that we are only ever all together when there is a big occasion. Hopefully the weather will be nice for you!
