Tax code changing?

Hi, I have a question I hope someone can help me with, I have recently started making contributions to an AVC through my employer, I have just received my first wage slip since setting up the payments, and my tax code has changed to 409T, and national insurance cat has changed to D. so I have had to pay tax this month even though I dont usually earn enough (part time) is this because of my paying into the AVC, or caused by something else. I logged onto the self assesment webpage to look at my latest coding notice and there isnt a new one with that code, but I did notice they have requested a tax return for last year, even though I ceased my self employment in August 2011, and put this on my last tax return so didnt think I would need to do one for 2012/13 is this because of the AVC payments as well?

A reduced tax code will have nothing to do with paying AVCs. A reduction in your tax code can be down to taxable benefits such as private health insurance, company car ect through your company. It can also be down to tax owing from a previous year.I logged onto the self assesment webpage to look at my latest coding notice and there isnt a new one with that code,
You would normally be sent a P2 Coding Notice by post as well. I take it you haven't received one?but I did notice they have requested a tax return for last year, even though I ceased my self employment in August 2011, and put this on my last tax return so didnt think I would need to do one for 2012/13 is this because of the AVC payments as well?
No it will be nothing to do with AVCs. It's quite possible as your are on SA that you will continue to be sent tax returns unless you specifically request to be removed from SA.
Best to speak to HMRC and find out what's going on.0
