Broken sewing machine

Hi

I've got my Mom's old sewing machine (Necchi Lydia) which I haven't used for a couple of years. I want to make new curtains for the living room but the machine seems to have something wrong with it. When you depress the pedal there's a slow whuring as though the motor is trying to turn the wheel but the needle doesn't move. You can hand turn it, but nothing else.

I'm trying to save money by making my own curtains (I also enjoy doing it) but I'm worried this is an expensive repair. Any ideas what might be wrong? Where can I take it?

Thanks

Try oiling it first according to the instructions.

The belt may be a bit worn/loose - try turning the wheel by hand towards you while you're pressing the pedal and that may be enough to get it going.

    Good luck!

Perhaps you disengaged the motor from the 'Sewing' function in order to wind a bobbin last time you used it and haven't re-set it. Worth a try!

I don't really know much about sewing machines, but I had something similar with mine back in January, after I'd been sewing some fluffy material. I had to take out the bobbin mechanism (?is it called the shuttle??) and clean it out - there were some fibres caught in there which were stopping it from working properly. I gave the whole area a good clean out and it seems to be working fine now (touch wood!!)

    Cheers
