Tax Code 0T

I posted this on the wrong board to start with, sorry for the double post :o

For some reason my tax code on my last p45 (from job centre) is 0T - from what I can deduce on the internet this isn't the correct code for me and is usually used when people fill in a p46 - and then it gets sorted out a month later.

Does the same principal apply when it's on the p45 - ie will I get overtaxed this month, then it'll get worked out correctly next month? Or am I better off filling in the p46 now to save hassle further down the road

I can only presume that you are starting a new job?

If so, the correct thing to do is hand in your P45. However, it is likely to be from a previous tax year (2012/13). If this is to be your only job, I would complete a form P46 and tick box 'b'. You will be placed on code 944L M1 which is the correct code on an emergency basis. If you are to be paid monthly and your first pay is on 30th April you will pay the correct tax over the full tax year.

The code 0T is used for those people who do not hand in a P45 nor complete a P46 (or does not complete section 1 on the P46).
