Advice for friend- CV

Hiya quite a sensitive one here,
A friend of mine suffered a severe sexual assault just over 2 years ago, it was reported to the police and is still being investigated.
About 3-6 months after it happened she came off the rails in a big way, she was not leaving house, was taking drugs/drink etc to mask what had happened etc.
To cut a long story short she ended up with a conviction for drugs ( caution ) and a conviction for fraud by misrepresentation ( c/service ), her councillor has said that he believed she had a form of complete breakdown
She was previously of great character and had a very good job etc
So heres the question - for which I have no idea how to advise her - she is now in a much brighter place, she is attending regular counselling and is back to her old self again - apart from the occasional wobbles and she is now looking to go back into full time work
So my question is with regards to her CV is she better explaining a 2 year absence by stating she had a personal issue ( does not seem to sound very good ) or does she need to be upfront with what happened and maybe even enlcose a cover letter to explain the conviction as well?
I feel so sorry for her as she just did not cope with what happened but obviously from an employers perspective it does not look good without explanation but she does not want to be mentioning what happened either in too much detail- for obvious reasons
