Fabric for Bridesmaid dresses - Best places to source.

Options
I've been looking in local fabric shops for dress material for my bridesmaids, but not quite found what I'm looking for.

Can anyone recommend markets or somewhere that has a huge selection? Did think about paying a visit to London to Berwick Street as understand lots of fabric shops there. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thank you in advance :)

My dressmaker took me to Hammersmith - their fabric was a fraction of the price of those in Berwick Street.

Are you near one of the Abakhan Fabric shops? Their larger ones carry a large selection of bridal fabrics. Don't be put off by the reviews that say fabric is sold by the kilo - that's just the roll ends and remnants, they also have some lovely fabric on the roll and sold by the metre as normal.

  • If you're headed to london I'd go to Goldhawk road near shepherds bush. There's about ten or so fabric shops along the road (if you google it a couple of blogs with maps come up), can't quite remember all the names of the shops but Classic textiles and A-z fabrics were good. There's a really good selection including lots of silks and it's usually a bargin especially if you compare prices between shops. Some of the shops do take a bit of rummaging though, loads of fabric in tiny spaces.
I found Berwick street crazy expensive, but there was some pretty stuff

Thank you so much for all your replies. Really appreciated.

Don't think I'm near any Abakhan shops but will look on their website!

Looks like I need a trip to London...Goldhawk Road sound like a good place to spend the day. RainbowDrop was there many shops in Hammersmith in one area?

    Thank you x

Hmm, I think I got Hammersmith & Shep. Bush. Loads on Goldhawk Road.

I'm looking for fabric that's the same as that used in the twobirds bridesmaid dresses but I'm new to this fabric malarky... Does anyone know what the fabric is called, that I should be Googling for. I know it's a four way stretch but that's about it.

Also thinking of a trip to London if my dressmaker can't source it :)

If its 4 way stretch, then you need to google spandex, lycra, or maybe jersey and interlock might bring up something. This is specialist fabric, usually used for sportswear/swimwear, so not likely you will find much on the highstreet

Fabricland in uk, has a small selection, but i think you will most likely need to buy from USA. So try Fabric.com or Fabricworldusa.com

You might also want to check that your dressmaker can work with this type of material, as it can be difficult to work with, and they may need to find a specialist in lycra work.

Thank you both. Have had a look at a label of a two birds dress and it says "Nylon/Spandex/Jersey" but not what % is which.
Been to a couple of fabric shops near me but not found anything suitable. Would I be able to find this kind of thing in the areas you've mentioned in London? Doesn't help that I'm quite picky about the colour! Looking for a dusky purple.

Have you tried looking at asian material shops?

I bought the material for my bridesmaid at one of these shops and I was spoilt for choice
