Taking up a hobby? Any free courses you can do online or locally?

Free clubs or events nearby? A walking club for example.

    Damn I'm doomed.

wii fit ;) hobbies and volunteering

i was unemployed for a while and was never bored but also could not enjoy having free time as i was so worried about not getting another job
  • Gardening - I try and get as much via freecycle as possible (people on my local freecycle often give away stuff like extra seedlings, half bags of compost etc), and this year, I hope to get a proper wee veggie patch going.

Try places like your local community centres.

We get so many people who ring up looking to see if they can volunteer but then they never turn up.

I draw, I can't afford to buy paint, canvasses and brushes etc, while unemployed but a pack of cheap copier paper and a pen and pencil are viable.
Are there no local libraries you could go to?
I like reading textbooks. If you have a desired industry (for me it's science), you can read up on things and mention them to look proactive at interviews.
Plus if you have a particular interest or hobby, you could look around for local societies. You might meet some like-minded people (and some weirdos).

Agree with doing voluntary work, even if its only half a day a week it will get you out of the house.

Or you could try self-improvement. If you've identified a skills gap on your cv then you can find online courses that will help. Or even use it to take up a new hobby.

When I was out of work for months on end a couple of years ago I went to the local Volunteers centre and got hooked up with a couple of local charities for a couple of days a week. I also studied for and passed a business skills diploma (cost money but got the investment back when I got a job as a direct result!).

How about internships? If there's a local company you really fancy working for you can contact their HR department and offer your services for free a couple of days a week in exchange for the experience.
