Wage Slips

Hi, my husband has been working for a company for 6 weeks now he is still being paid by cheque rather than the money going into his bank, he has asked the owner for his wage slips but the reply he got was i only give wage slips for full time staff - my husband only took the job as it was advertised as full time permanent - anyway we are now looking for another job (hopefully got a couple lined up) but do companies not have to give wage slips ?
Thanks

He needs to tell them that he needs the payslips as proof of earnings as he is applying for WTC.
He does have a right to know he is being paid correctly with all Tax & NI deducted.
