Please help, desperately need advice and opinions on jobseeking

Hi I am new to this forum and really need advice on my current situation.

I was made redundant at the beginning of March which came out the blue for me as there were no rumours of redundancy in the company I worked for. I am a qualified accounting technician and I have gotten quite a few interviews but so far no job, this is largely due to the vast number of applicants applying for each role.

I had one interview last week and should hear back from the company today, it's not in the field I really want to work in but it is a role I have done before and enjoyed. Problem with this role is it is not full time (it was advertised as full time) and may only be able to give me 20 hours a week. I have another interview this week for a full time role in the accountancy sector but it is a temporary role until the end of November, also I have an interview next week for a full time permanent role but I know loads have people have applied for it.

I am at a loss at what to do if the first company offer me the part time role, I got on really well with the interviewer and he said I was one of the best candidates given my previous experience so I think they may offer me a job. The job situation where I live is dire and I have a mortgage to pay, I have a small amount of saving but I am going nuts at home and want a job so badly just to be able have a normal routine and feel like I'm contributing to society.

On top of everything I really want to have a baby next year, which is why I am thinking a temporary role may be a bad idea. I have savings for this and my partners income but he can't support us on one income I really don't want to be pregnant and unemployed at the end of the year.

Please can someone give me some advice, would you take a job which is part time but permanent or wait to see how the other interviews go bearing in mind so many others are applying for similar jobs?

Many thanks

Hi and welcome to the boards. Sorry to hear about your redundancy, I am also not working at the moment and know how tough the job market is.

Congratulations on getting a few interviews. I hate to say it but I think you are counting your chickens before they hatch...i.e. you may not be offered any of these jobs...although I hope you are obviously!

If you can survive on the 20 hours job and are offered it then I would take it. You could always look for another part time job or maybe go self employed as well (could you do someone's books for example?)

Just out of interest what reason did the company give to advertising a full time job then changing it to part time?
  • Thank you for replying, you are right I may not get offered any of those jobs but if I get offered the part time job I think I may take it.

I saw the job posted on the Jobmatch website which definitely says full time. I was told it was only part time at the interview as they could not guarantee me any more hours but said there is likely to be overtime available, as they get very busy in the summer, which could bring the hours up to 40 per week which is why they advertised as full time.

Yes they say it's easier to find a job when you are in a job which I do believe myself.

They are a bit cheeky don't you think for advertising as FT when it is clearly only PT. Is it one of those zero hours contracts?
  • They are a bit cheeky (I was a bit upset really as the company seemed nice) and I am not sure about the zero hour contract but almost all my interviews have asked if I can do overtime without much notice so I just assumed that is normal now.
