What to do?

I have just started a new job (local authority) and I have automatically been entered into the pension scheme - which is fine.

However, I have a small pot of contributions (6 years worth) from a previous employer that are just sitting around and I'm not sure what to do with them or whether they just have to stay there. I left that employer about 20 months ago and the pension plan was with Aviva..

Any advice welcome...

Ask your LGPS administrator if they will allow you to transfer the old pension into the LGPS and how many years service it will buy.

Assuming it's less than 12 months since you started your current job, look for a 'transfer request' form on the LGPS fund administrator's website (outside of London, stick the name of the county and 'pensions' into Google, e.g. 'Essex pensions' if you work in Essex), complete it, and send it to them (the fund administrator that is, not your employer/payroll). They will then liaise with Aviva or whoever, and provide you with a quote for how much LGPS membership the previous pension will buy you. You would then have a month to decide whether to proceed.
