CV Profile Slightly Different to Linked In Profile

Hello, I wonder if anyone has thoughts on this. My profile on Linked In is slightly different to the profile on the CV I usually send out. On Linked In it is more general, on the CV I send out I focus on a specific aspect of the industry I am in.

Would this be an issue to potential employers? Shall i play it safe and update Linked In to match the CV word for word?

It's only the profile, everything else matches.

I don't see a problem with them being different - as long as they don't contradict each other. The CV can be tailored to the job you're applying for.

Cool, just had a freak out as an employer I have applied to has checked my profile - and not contacted me (yet).
Just need to get a decent close up headshot for the picture and it will be sorted - current one is me sitting in a field. It made sense at the time...

Get rid of the photo asap, I think it's better not to have one than to have one that might not be appropriate for the type of job you are looking for.

So long as the dates match in terms of job/study history I wouldn't worry about the general info not matching exactly - after all, you should send a targeted CV to each employer so assuming you are going to apply for more than 1 job a month, any employer with half a brain will realise this.

I agree with Joolsybools and marlet that it’s really important to tailor your CV to each employer or the job you’re applying for.

With over 100 million users LinkedIn is an invaluable tool when used in the right way. Many employers use it as a matter of course during their recruitment process so your profile could be seen as an extension of and more informal version of your CV.

Here are some points you might want to consider to help make it work for you:

Sounds obvious but keep it up to date. After all you wouldn’t send a CV to an employer without giving it the all clear would you?

Don’t sit and wait for opportunities to fall on your lap. Be proactive, join in, and contribute to group discussions. The more you put in the more you’ll get out!

Think outside the box! Look at other people’s profiles to see how they’re using them. There are a number of websites that show examples of ‘the best’ or ‘the top ten’ profiles but remember to remain objective!

I wonder...How long have you been using LinkedIn?

  • I have been on Linked In for a good few years but only now is it becoming a great resource for job hunting. There are also some interviews I have been to where I haven't been quite right but they liked me and so connecting with the interviewer and following the company for updates are brilliant, perfect.

My Linked In tip: Write a personal message when you invite someone to connect.
