Business Rates

I had my own business but was made bankrupt last October. The landlord did not officially take the premises back until mid November. I now have the council insisting that I owe business rates from the bankruptcy date until the landlord officially took the business back. Anybody help with this?

Possible that you may be liable. I would query the situation with your OR/trustee.

The official receiver should send a notice to all relevant local authorities where the bankrupt is responsible for the payment of council tax or business rates on any premises. Further information on council tax may be found in paragraph 40.102. The notice should quote the address(es) of the premises together with the reference number(s) if known. Where the bankrupt no longer occupies business premises the local authority should be informed as it may be the case that no further business rates may be incurred. If the bankrupt owns or leases the premises there may still be a liability for business rates even if the property is unoccupied.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB
