Good brands to look out for on ebay are Renne of Paris because they are monotop, this means they can be parted anywhwre. A classic style can only beused in the style they were designed for. Also Noriko, Raquel Welch but they can be expensive.

Also look at 'pull throughs' which add volumn, or a topper for a central bald patch.

    OP is female.
Also it's not about how friends or family treat you (most of the time) it's about how you see yourself, and the image you put forward to strangers is something we all have to deal with, even if we want to say sod them, it's often not that easy, especially if your hair loss is severe, in a prominent position or unusual pattern.

Yes to the above. It is hard to find a job if you are missing most of your hair. They might not say anything to you to your face, but when there is 50+ applicants per job presentation counts, especially if you have not worked for a few years you don't any additional "handicaps". BTW my friends know and accept me.

Hair harvest have an online wig store.

Another website I cannot remember, I have an email from them, but don't know what to search for.

Is £160+ for a short wig, shorter wigs would be cheaper than longer wigs? Can you pay in installments, put it on a credit card and pay that off slowly?

I've seen trainee hairdressers use synthetic wigs.

Save up, no idea if your birthday is anytime soon, ask for money instead of presents?

Skip for food instead of buying (I don't know if this is possible in the Northwest) and save up food money, reduce any other expenditure if it is possible. I am aware that it may not be possible at all.

Wear a headscarf for non religious reasons.

What do the jobcentre say? I know they give out loans for people to buy suits for interviews, do they require you bring in the receipts? I guess they probably do, but if they do not, you could put that towards a wig?

I am just posting ideas that may or may not be of use.

I haven't tried the Job Centre. I thought the NHS might help first. The NHS approved hairdresser told me I had a good chance of getting help from them. Yes, I can save, but I was trying to speed things up. Summer is coming and wearing a beanie just looks weird. Last year I wore sun hats but at some point they stop looking cute (think evening and night outings). I'm trying to get a medium length wig because I tried some short ones and they make me look older (I'd though it be the opposite, who knew?).

Anyway, thank you all for the suggestions. I will go and really think about all the suggestions. I love you all.

My GP was not sympathetic and suggested: 1)either go out without a hat and be brave; 2)go private. He said the NHS wouldn't help with a wig because I'm not a cancer patient and my problem is cosmetic.

Speechless - so you have to lose your hair through cancer (nothing else) to meet the criteria for getting a wig?

It might be worth seeing a different GP, I'm disgusted at this. It shouldn't matter what medical condition has caused you to lose your hair.

I did go for a second opinion. The GP -this time a female GP- was a lot more compassionate. She's sent me for tests and arranged a consultation with a dermatologist (a month away due to long queue's).

I think what got me  at the first GP was his suggestion to just accept it as a medical condition and go out in public with my head uncovered, or wear scarves 24/7. He didn't even offered to refer me to a specialist. Lazy much?

First of all, sending hugs, OP. I know what its like - I lost my thick, long, expensively highlighted blonde hair to anaemia caused by cancer and its not nice - i had everything from staring and whispering to outright abuse about it. I have two wigs, one of which I've just bought from a shop in Nottingham for my rugby club awards dinner next week. It looks gorgeous and I only paid a bargain £23 for it, synthetic of course but it looks really natural. You can buy online too - http://www.missyhair.co.uk/map/ my hair has grown back but I still prefer to wear wigs and scarves as the front is still very thin.
I had to pay for both of mine (although my Mum kindly bought me my first one as an Xmas present) as I believe the criteria is more to do with income than what the hair loss is caused by (my cancer was undiagnosed at the worst of my hair loss and by the time it was diagnosed it had grown back although still was horrendously short)
Glad you've found a more helpful GP and good luck :)

I thought I would add an update. The second GP I went to see sent me for blood tests. Guess what? My iron levels were low as were my vitamin D levels. I am now on a prescription for both.

However, the GP said she very much doubts that the NHS will help pay for the wig. Not asking for a 100% help, 50% would do me fine. Apparently the NHS is not helping with wigs unless you are a cancer patient.

Went private for the wig armed with a credit card...
