HSBC have taken my loan payment out three times last month. The payments were meant to be taken on the 4th and 28th of March but there was also another payment taken on 14th which wasn't scheduled. I have spent several hours on the phone to them in the past two days and I am yet to get an answer or any idea when I am going to receive a refund. Has anyone else ever had this problem? I have recently changed banks and had a little trouble with my direct debits but everything seemed to have been sorted by 4th March, when the direct debit went out. Getting desperate here, have £37 to my name until they sort it out!

Use the Direct Debit Guarantee: http://www.directdebit.co.uk/DirectDebitExplained/Pages/DirectDebitGuarantee.aspx.

As, no doubt, payments towards your loan are for a fixed amount at set intervals HSBC doesn't have to give you notice under the DD Guarantee of every payment.

However, you should be notified in advance if there are any changes to the arrangement. Taking an extra payment is either a mistake or something they haven't notified you about. Both circumstances are covered by the DD Guarantee.

They have refunded my loan payment and given me £30 to cover bank charges. Result!
