How to make and season perfect microwave or stove popcorn, help please!

HI There

I am dieting at the moment, I am a big snacker and one of my fave snacks is low-fat flavoured popcorn from M&S so I really want to be able to make my own at home but keep it as low fat as poss.

I tried last night using a cup of kernels in a microwave safe pyrex bowl in my 800w microwave but after 3 mins only half had popped and the rest was slightly burning, should I have added some oil or butter in with the kernels?

Also when I took them out I used a low-cal spray oil and added some paprika seasoning but it really didnt come out very pleasant tasting, can anyone give me some hints or point me in the direction of a failsafe recipe please?? I am going to buy some of the popcorn flavours from amazon, s&v and sour cream and chive, when I get some money together but I need a tried and tested way to make the popcorn first.

Many Thanks in advance!

I make popcorn for the kids.....heat 1tbsp oil in a saucepan and when really hot add in 50g popping corn. I have a glass lid which is useful to see when it's done, but I put the corn in and turn the heat down slightly, and shake the pan on and off till it's done.

My kids like sugared popcorn, so leave it to cool a bit (or it goes syrupy) and sprinkle with sugar. I'm sorry, I'm not sure how to flavour with other things, I guess it's just a case of experimenting!

I find microwaves take ages to pop corn that hasnt been oiled. If you want lo-cal popcorn then one of the machines that uses hot air work best. Can pick one up on ebay for a few pound

Light sprays are plasticiers, so no they dont taste nice if used uncooked. I would expect a dusting of paprika to stick without the need of oil tho
  • I second the hot air machine. Got mine off freecycle and no oil needed to cook the corn so keeps fat content down.

I'm rubbish at flavourings though so interested to see what comes up here.
