Insurance query

I hope I'm posting this enquiry in the correct place.
Last year I got my household insurance through Kwik-Fit of all people. It was cheap, so I signed up. This year the renewal quote they sent was fanciful so I went on to a comparison site and got cheaper insurance elsewhere. At the same time I cancelled my Direct debit payment to Kwik-fit at the end of the 12 month term, though I did not contact them to confirm cancellation, believing the D/d stopping to be good enough notice of intent.
Now they are sending me threatening letters stating that I have broken my contract with them and demanding compensation payments in lieu of the cancellation. Personally it sounds like bluster to me, but I wondered if anybody out there knew of any legislation relevant to this that I can quote to Kwik-fit before telling them where to get off.
Any help would be much appreciated

What does your insurance paperwork say regarding cancellation ? ...C.R.A.P.R.O.L.L.Z # 40 spanner supervisor. No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thought.Only after the last tree has been cut down. Only after the last fish has been caught. Only after the last river has been poisoned. Only then will you realize that money cannot be eaten."l! ilyë yantë ranya nar vanwë"0

Cancelling a DD doesn't cancel a car insurance. If it was done in error would you be happy that they cancelled the policy? Monthly car insurance is actually more of a loan, you have only fell behind on your repayments and this will show on your credit report.
Cancelling the DD only means you need to pay them by other means, it doesn't void anything. You still owe them the premiums until you cancel the policy.
You can tell them to get lost, but you will have default on your credit profile.0 -

That was an incorrect assumption. Cancelling the direct debit only cancels the payment method. Not the contract. Now they are sending me threatening letters stating that I have broken my contract with them and demanding compensation payments in lieu of the cancellation.
